Kromtech, the current owners, have filed two lawsuits. Have been successfully sued regarding their malicious advertising in 2014, the class action ended with a 2 million settlement with no disclosure of wrongdoing.
The advertisers are in on the game also, Kromtech paid 50% commission on sales to advertiser, so fuck them too! Known to use sock puppet reviews to discredit their competitors, fuck these guys! Malwarebytes and Sophos, the two well loved and legit anti virus software creators, classify Mackeeper as “potentially unwanted software”. Two review sites, Tom’s guide and Macworld, have guides on how to remove it! Ouch.
It has horrible reviews, the best review comes from softonic who said it’s “not perfect but genuinely useful”, but also notes it exaggerates security threats of not having a security app. Given the adware reputation of the software, maybe this is unsurprising. If you have got it, you can get rid of it completely by the uninstall features in CleanMyMac. So to your question: MacKeeper is an app you never, never want on your computer. Because it works and has done so for years. So when People warn about not using “cleaner apps” they should exclude this particular app. Any of those versions can do what the other apps are not very good at. The X-version is a new subscription version. It now exists in two very useful versions: “CleanMyMac 3” and “CleanMyMac X”. There is one app, which actually can help the average user. For some this does not matter, but for others it is not desirable. Google likes to be on your computer, you see. When you install Crome Browser you may get a little more than you bargain for. For this reason you often see comments about not using “cleaner apps” on your Mac. When you download MacKeeper directly or as a part of some “cheap” bundle of software you also may get software, you do not want or exepct. It hurts your system and is very hard to get rid of.
But exactly this app called MacKeeper is the worst. There are a number of apps which pretend or at least try to what some call “cleaning” the Mac.
